The current waiting shelter for Amtrak service in Cumberland sits on the original site of the magnificent Queen City Station. This was a 150 room hotel constructed by the B&O with ornate gardens and fountains. The station was demolished in 1972, an act which spurred on conservation efforts for architecturally and historically significant structures.
A lot of interesting passenger equipment has passed through Cumberland, including numerous examples of privately owned railcars (known as private varnish), Amtrak's experimental TurboTrain, and the luxury American-European Express. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Train still passes through town on its way between major shows.
Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides intercity service to Cumberland under the Capitol Limited route.
Of the six Maryland stations served by Amtrak, Cumberland was the fifth-busiest in FY2010, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 35 passengers daily.[2]
